Archaeology (terrestrial & water)
RedOx CHS can provide archaeological and heritage management services in both terrestrial and water based archaeology. We also offer courses in maritime archaeology for anyone who wishes to get involved.
Matthew is a maritime archaeologist who graduated from Auckland University (BA) and Flinders University, Adelaide (M. M. Arch).
As an archaeologist (with over 20 years’ experience) he specialises in Underwater/Maritime Archaeology, although in New Zealand, he works mostly in the land based arena.
During, and following, his studies he worked overseas before returning to New Zealand in 2017. His overseas employment as a maritime and land archaeologist was at the Western Australian Maritime Museum (Fremantle, Kalmar Läns museum (Kalmar) and Bohusläns museum (Uddevalla) in Sweden. On returning to New Zealand, he was employed for several years with W. Gumbley Ltd in Hamilton.
He has expansive knowledge and varied experience in completing archaeological projects ranging from archaeological advice, assessments and surveys through to complex maritime and terrestrial excavations both domestically and internationally.
Matthew’s research spans multiple areas within archaeology including: fishing structures, HMS Buffalo, seafaring and trade, ports, navigation structures, shoe based industry, early NZ Mission Stations, Māori horticulture and occupation, historic occupation and land use.
Within the discipline some of his major interests are public outreach, 3D scanning, GIS mapping, remote sensing and documentation, site formation processes and in-situ preservation of archaeological sites.
